Rome & Ostia Itinerary

Day 1. Wednesday, March 27: Fly to Rome. 

Day 2. Thursday March 28: To get from the airport to the hotel, there will be one coach available to ride at 11:00am.  Otherwise you will need to take a taxi (48Euros) or other public transportation into the city.  Check in by 12:00 noon if possible:  12.30pm Lunch on your own (e.g. Pizzeria Galilei).  At 2.00pm we will visit Santa Maria Sopra Minerva;  2.30pm (Sr. Chris guide) Santa Maria Sopra Minerva, the only public Gothic church in Rome.   It houses the tomb of St. Catherine of Siena, and we will have a prayer service there honoring this great female doctor of the Church.  The tomb of the Dominican artist Fra. Angelico is also there.  The Church is close to the Pantheon so around  4.00pm we will visit, time permitting. Upon our return to the guesthouse, we enjoy Sr. Chris's lecture: Introduction to the Study of Women in Early Christianity.  Dinner is on your own.

Day 3. Friday March 15: San Clemente Basilica, the Coliseum, the Roman and Imperial Fora and the Market of Trajan. After breakfast we enjoy Sr. Chris’s lecture: Women in Greco-Roman Culture. Then Sr. Chris guides our tour of the fascinating basilica of San Clemente, site of one of the earliest Christian house churches, next to an ancient Mithraic altar at the lowest level. Sr. Chris leads our prayerful reflection honoring early martyrs and women leaders, Saints Perpetua and Felicity. Lunch is on your own at one of the many restaurants enroute to the Coliseum and the Roman Forum. Then we have a guided tour of the Coliseum, the Roman and Imperial Fora and the Market of Trajan.  Dinner on your own.

Day 4. Saturday March 30: 9.00am Lecture by Sr. Chris:10.00am (Sr. Chris guide) Christian Rome: Walk to the Basilica of St. Pudentiana, St. Praxedes Basilica: 12.30pm Lunch on your own (lots of options on the way to Termini): 1:45pm leave for Catacombs of Priscilla incl. Prayer service:3.30pm leave for 4.00pm tour of Catacombs of Marcellinus and Pietrus ( 5.00pm bus back: 5.30pm Lecture by Sr. Chris: 7.30pm DINNER TOGETHER

Day 5, Sunday March 31: Morning Free/Mass in Suore di Cristo chapel:[Sunday] Lunch on your own:2.00pm leave for Catacombs (15 mins): 2.30pm (Sr. Chris guide) The Catacombs of Domitilla [ticket: 8.00] with prayer service: 3.30pm leave for Church of Santa Sabina:4.00pm tour of Santa Sabina and prayer service:5.30pm return to via Merulana:6.00pm Lecture by Sr. Chris in breakfast room with wine/cheese  7.30pm DINNER TOGETHER.

Day 6. Monday 1 April:9.00am Bus: Vatican Museum: 9.30am (Sr. Chris guide/introduction) Vatican Museums: Pio Clementino, Maps, Tapestries, Raphael rooms, The Sistine Chapel:Lunch on your own (e.g. cafeteria musei, or Osteria Padi on the other side): 2.00pm Excavation beneath St. Peter’s:3.30pm Tour of St. Peter’s:5.00pm bus back to via Merulana: 5.30pm Lecture by Sr. Chris: 7.00pm dinner on your own.

Day 7. Tuesday 2 April: Ostia. 8.00am Bus to Ostia: 10.00am (Sr. Chris guide) Sr. Chris’s guided tour of nearby Ostia:Prayer service honoring St. Monica:Back at about 1.00pm - lunch and afternoon free.  FAREWELL DINNER TOGETHER.

Day 8. Wednesday 3 April: Return to USA.
